YRES Encourages Creativity and Problem-Solving at Elkhorn Public School’s Fun Fair

York Region Educational Services attended Elkhorn Public School’s Fun Fair with team members Asteria, Nicole, Amy, and Elaine. Together, they welcomed families to the YRES booth, introduced children to LEGO Art, Science, and Robotics activities, and shared information about the organization’s educational programs.

Asteria, the event lead, focused on handing out flyers and encouraging parents and children to visit the booth and try the activities. The experience also supported her personal growth as she shared that she had previously been very introverted, but participating in the event made her “more willing to communicate with people and look out for the world”.

Nicole enjoyed seeing children connect the LEGO Science activities to concepts they had already learned, including energy and levers. She also helped create a more challenging robotics maze for two experienced children. Nicole described it as “incredible to see so many kids having fun, exploring new ideas, and problem-solving through the activities”.

For Amy, the event was her first Fun Fair. Although she felt nervous beforehand, the support of her event lead helped her feel more comfortable. She especially enjoyed watching children use their imaginations to build original LEGO creations, sharing that “they were very creative”. Despite the hot weather at the beginning of the event, the team was eventually able to move into the shade and continue engaging with families.

Elaine, the marketing lead, also highlighted the creativity and collaboration shown during the robotics activities. One experienced child was given two challenging mazes and worked with other children at the booth to solve them as a group. Elaine shared that meeting and interacting with families was enjoyable and helped her further develop her communication and problem-solving skills.

Overall, the LEGO Fun Fair gave YRES an opportunity to introduce families to hands-on learning while helping team members strengthen their confidence, teamwork, and communication skills. The children’s enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to return to the booth made the event a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
