YRES Brings LEGO Learning to the Alvin Curling Spring Fair

York Region Educational Services attended the Alvin Curling Public School Spring Fair with team members Celia, Sandy, Megha, and Thadseja. Together, they hosted an interactive booth featuring LEGO Robotics, LEGO Art, and LEGO Science activities while introducing families to YRES programs and upcoming camps.

Celia, the event lead and LEGO Robotics coordinator, shared that children enjoyed all three LEGO stations, with the tote bag prizes being an especially popular part of the booth. The fair’s nostalgic music also added to the lively atmosphere and made it clear that families were having a great time. Celia described the day as “so so so fun”, noting that the booth received steady traffic throughout the fair. She especially appreciated being able to introduce creativity through LEGO Art, basic coding through LEGO Robotics, and concepts involving forces through LEGO Science.

Sandy coordinated the LEGO Art station and prizes. Her highlights included meeting new people, speaking with families about YRES educational programs, and seeing children participate in all three activities. She described the Spring Fair as “a wonderful experience” and said that the LEGO stations were “a huge hit”. For Sandy, it was exciting to see children being creative, engaged, and eager to learn in a fun and interactive environment.

For Megha, the event was her first Fun Fair and an opportunity to build new connections. She enjoyed meeting other staff members, teaching children about force through a hands-on LEGO Science activity, and answering parents’ questions about YRES camps. Megha described the experience as “a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community” while presenting educational concepts in an enjoyable and accessible way.

The event was particularly meaningful for Thadseja, the marketing lead, who previously attended Alvin Curling Public School and grew up within the surrounding community. She enjoyed reconnecting with former teachers, capturing the excitement around the booth, and sharing her work with YRES and U+ Community. Reflecting on the day, she said, “Being back at ACPS was truly an amazing experience”, and described the fair as being “full of light, joy and lots of fun”. Returning as a team member gave her the chance to support the same community she once experienced as a student.

Overall, the Alvin Curling Spring Fair was a valuable opportunity for YRES to connect with families, encourage children’s creativity, and introduce hands-on learning through LEGO. With engaging activities, enthusiastic team members, and strong interest from parents, the booth provided a memorable educational experience for the entire community.
